Types of laser lifting

Skin

Most treatments commonly called laser lifting are device treatments that deliver heat beneath the skin with focused ultrasound (HIFU) or radiofrequency (RF) to improve firmness. Each type of energy reaches a different depth and feels different, and results often appear over several months.

01About the name

"Laser lifting" is a widely used term, but strictly speaking many lifting devices use ultrasound or radiofrequency rather than lasers. At a consultation, asking what kind of energy is used and at what depth makes comparison easier than asking about device names.

02Ultrasound (HIFU)

Ultrasound is focused on a single point to create heat in the deep layers of the skin. It is often used to tighten deeper layers, for example along a sagging jawline or cheeks. Areas close to bone can be painful.

03Radiofrequency (RF)

Radiofrequency current heats a wide area of the dermis. It is often used to improve skin texture, firmness and fine lines. It usually feels hot.

04Laser-based devices

Devices that act on layers close to the skin surface, such as fractional lasers, are closer to treatments for texture, pores and scars than for sagging. They are sometimes combined with lifting devices.

06Before your treatment

  • Ask for the device name and the amount used (such as the number of shots) to be written on the quote.
  • Results often appear over weeks to months rather than right away.
  • Swelling, redness and temporary numbness can occur after treatment.

08FAQ

Should I choose ultrasound or radiofrequency?

It depends on where the sagging is, how thick your skin is and how much discomfort you can tolerate. Some people have both, together or alternately, so be specific about your goals at the consultation.

How long do the results last?

It varies a lot between people, and there is no set period. Many people repeat the treatment at intervals of a few months to a year.
